5 New Books that Feature the Ocean

I find the ocean absolutely fascinating.  I think part of the reason why is because I have lived in a land-locked location my entire life.  The few times I have visited the ocean I was completely enamored and mystified by its sheer size and beauty.  In between my infrequent visits to the ocean I have to settle with the aquarium and aquatic themed books and movies.  My kiddos have the same dilemma.  It’s a good thing there are so many lovely books featuring the ocean that are being released right now.  I love that they are a mix between fictional and factual and all of them have me wishing for warmer climate and sand between my toes.  Here is a list of five books (3 new release and 2 to watch out for) that feature the ocean for all of you who, like me, are fans of the sea.

“If I Were a Whale” by Shelley Gill and Erik Brooks-  This is a nonfiction board book with simple text and great illustrations for younger children.  My favorite part of this book is that it highlights several different kinds of whales.  It is a great introduction to some of the most fascinating mammals on the planet and it’s one that adults are bound to enjoy as much as children.

“Swimming With Sharks: The Daring Discoveries of Eugenie Clark” by Heather Lang and Jordi Solano- This is a nonfiction story based on the career of Eugenie Clark who was a scientist nicknamed “shark lady” who helped change society’s, and even science’s perspective of sharks to one that is more understanding and appreciative of their beauty and cleverness.

“The Storm Whale in Winter” by Benji Davies– In this sequel to storm whale Noi finds himself in a bit of trouble looking for his dad out in the ocean.  However, the tide changes for the better when his old friend returns to his rescue.  I love the slow and calming feel of this book along with its beautiful illustrations.

“Turtle Tug to the Rescue” by Michael Slack. – Turtle Tug is out on a mission to rescue all the sea creatures stuck in various predicaments before an upcoming storm.  I love the bright illustrations and I love the few aspects of the story, such as trash in the ocean, that can start a discussion on ocean preservation. (This  one is released March 21st and is available for pre-order.)

“The Pout Pout Fish, Far, Far From Home” by Deborah Diesen and Dan Hanna- Any other fans of Pout Pout Fish out there?  We are and this new tale of him headed out on a vacation is every bit as fun as all his other books.  Be prepared for creativity and loads of fun.  (This one is released April 4th and is available for pre-order.)
