Before I Wake Up…

“Before I wake up, I float through my dreams… imagining worlds, never ending it seems.”

Before I Wake Up… by Britta Teckentrup

Books before bedtime are always a good idea in my opinion. But have you noticed that some books are just more suited for bedtime?  Different books just seem to have specific niches they naturally fall into.  Some are best to open discussion on topics, some are excellent teachers, some are wildly entertaining, some induce giggle fits, and some are calm and soothing.  I love these traditional bedtime stories.  They are obviously a favorite pick at bedtime because they seem to have a magic affect on wiggly toddlers that need that extra little bit of help calming down before you tuck them in.  They have soothing color palates, the rhythm of the words seem to wrap around and lull you and, coincidentally, they are usually about the topic of bedtime and sleeping.

This book is one of those books.  It is about a little girl who drifts into a dreamland full of wonder where her beloved stuffed tiger is her accompanying guide.  Together they meet new friends, sail the seas, swim with whales, and explore. The plot is simple and lovely, perfect for bedtime.

The color palette that Britta uses is dark, earthy, and calming with the occasional brilliant pop of color.  Her text has that lulling rhythm I referred to and is simply magical.  Britta Teckentrup is fast becoming one of my favorites and this book does not disappoint.  I fell head-over-heels in love with the cover the moment I saw it and fell equally in love with the interior.  It is breath-taking.

My favorite part is as morning approaches beautiful hues of yellow and gold flood her illustrations and one of the last lines she pairs with it is “When I wake up, the sun kisses my skin.”   This one is a must in our home now.
