Canopy Book Nook Reveal

There’s only one thing that the book nerd side of me loves just as much as a good book (other than Harry Potter World at Universal Studios) , and that is a cozy book nook.  Having an incredible story to dive into is amazing, but having a cozy place to do the diving really makes me about as happy as can be.

When I was a child my favorite “book nook” that I remember was a disney princess play tent featuring the Beauty and the Beast Castle with the imagery from the scene where Belle and Beast feed the birds printed on the outside.  I would fill the inside of my tent with all the pillows and cozy blankets I could gather as well as a huge pile of my favorite stuffed animals and an even larger pile of books. Then, I would anxiously await saturdays where I would have undisturbed time in my castle tent to read to my hearts content.

I loved the idea of “hiding away” from the world and escaping into magical worlds with fictional friends that became dear.  I spent hours reading in that tent and I think those fond memories are part of the reason why I have been so excited to create book nooks for my little bookworms now that I am a mother. I recently put this one together for my little girl and It is quite possibly my new favorite place in our home.  I totally want to hide out here and read all week long.

Before I organized this nook in her room the corner was wasted space.  That’s when it hit me that it would be perfect for a canopy book nook!  I was so pleased when Blue House Joys agreed to collaborate with me for this project because I have been eying their book slings and canopies for a while now and they fit my vision perfectly for this space.

I started with their white canopy which is ethereal, gauzy and all around perfect.  For organizing the books (for what is a book nook without books?!) I paired it with their subtle gold shimmer book sling and a metallic gold basket that I picked up at Michaels on clearance.

Next, the obvious addition was loads of colorful pillows to add the cozy factor which is essential to all coveted reading spots.  In addition, I really wanted to add some whimsy and a touch of magic to this space which was why I included the star cloud mobile in white and gold from Baby Jives.  (The Blue House Joy canopies come with a loop inside to hang mobiles.)  I am seriously in love with this mobile and my little girl is completely fascinated with it. Win!  I mean, seriously, who wouldn’t love the view of looking up a white canopy to shiny dancing gold stars?

I am thrilled with how this space turned out.  Each item is one that I love and so far my little girl is excited about this addition to her room.  I know that she isn’t old enough to “read” yet, but she is at that age where she is constantly pulling out books accessible to her to look through and enjoy.  I really feel like this simple interest and calm exploration of books is an important first step in helping to create lifelong readers and I want to encourage it as much as possible.  For now, this is a place where she can dream and look through her books.  Later on, I hope it will become a nook where she will look forward to spending saturday afternoons really delving into books just as I did as child.
