Disgusting Critters Series

“The toad sometimes sheds her skin to keep it healthy, and that’s kind of gross.  It means she gets rid of the old skin, and then…SHE EATS IT! EWWW!” -The Toad

The Disgusting Critter Series by Elise Gravel

What is it with kids liking disgusting things?!  They are fascinated with bugs, and slime and dirt.  Don’t even think its just the boys.  When I was young I was fascinated too.  I grew out of it for the most part and now I am just as disgusted as a large chunk of the adult population.  Maybe thats why kids think disgusting things are so great, because they elicit entertaining reactions from their parents….  Either way, they are, and these books are perfect for them.

I think I have to give Elise Gravel a standing ovation for this series.  They are incredibly clever.  She wrote them with a heavy hand of humor and wit in such a way that even adults will enjoy reading them with their kids.  She throws in a ton of facts about each disgusting critter in each book alongside funny illustrations and hilarious comments.  The Toad is the newest book in the series and I included some interior photos of them below.  I think my favorite part of the book is when she mentions that toads are lazy eaters just waiting for their food to walk by and her little illustrated toad says “Sigh.  Maybe someday and ice cream cone will walk by…” as a centipede comes in his path.  So great!!  These books really are quite educational too.  Give them a try for the little disgusting critter lovers in your  life!
