“A Dot in the Snow” and “Tiny Tales Arctic Adventure”

“A Dot in the Snow” by Corrinne Averiss and Fiona Woodcock

This is one of the sweetest books that has come out this winter.  It is the story of a little playful polar bear who heads out in search of a friend and soon finds a little eskimo girl.  The two become instant playmates and spend an afternoon having fun until it is time to head back home to their mothers.  The simple storyline, darling text and minimalistic illustrations give this book a light and airy feeling.  It is one that we will read over and over and over again.

Tiny Tales of the Arctic Play Set

Such a sweet book deserves a sweet playlet and this little one from Tiny Tales is simple adorable.  It is a small wooden suitcase with a little gold latch that you open up to find a lovely winter scene and three arctic characters.  The characters include an eskimo complete with a “fur trimmed” hood, a polar bear and a little penguin.

The first time I saw this set I knew it would be a perfect match for this book.  It is just as sweet and simple, yet every bit as full of creativity and potential for fun.  Because it includes an eskimo and a polar bear I thought it would be perfect for imaginative play and retelling in regards to “A Dot in the Snow”.  To my delight, Tiny Tales was happy to send one my way to check out and share with you.

It is every bit as cute as it appears in photos and more.  Each little detail on each wooden character is well done and the suitcase is sturdy and delightful.  I love that there is a felt bottom for snow and the little igloo attached to the back makes it a nice little area for children to play on-the-go.

Now, you may be wondering how I think the penguin fits in with this pairing, seeing how there is no penguin in the book.  Well, I thought that he would make a wonderful invitation for children to extend the story and create one of their own.  Wouldn’t it be fun for them to create a sequel where the eskimo girl and polar bear make another new friend?  I think so too.   This set is sure not only to bring smiles, but entertain for hours and hours.
