“The Egg” and Painted Speckled Egg Craft

“The Egg” by Britta Teckentrup

Eggs are pretty amazing things when you think about it. They contain life, are home to it for any given time, and then give way to the emersion of the most extraordinary animals. The array of eggs that the world posesses and the species they facilitate is varied and complex in the most interesting way. Some of the differences between egg types are subtle and some are astounding making them a fascinating subject.

This new book by Britta Teckentrup is a gorgeously illustrated tribute to them and all their wonder. It is nonfiction and bursting with all sorts of information covering a wide range of topics surrounding eggs. This includes everything from their size and shape to even insect eggs and myths that eggs have inspired over the course of time. It is a hefty book perfect to fill anyone’s appetite for learning about these fascinating objects.

DIY Painted, Speckled Eggs

I was so inspired by this book, as well as the fact that springtime is upon us, that I just had to do an egg craft.  I really adore the illustrations in this book with their moody color palette and textures galore that I thought a simple painted egg would do the trick.  These speckled eggs could’t be any easier and are a fun, seasonal activity to follow this stunning book.

Supplies:

  • unfinished wooden eggs
  • non toxic acrylic paint
  • paint brushes
  • toothbrush

Process:

  • Paint the eggs a solid color of your choice.
  • After they have dried completely, using a toothbrush dedicated to crafting to create the speckled effect.  To do this simply place an ample amount of brown paint on the toothbrush, then using your finger, flick the toothbrush onto the egg.  You may want to do this process in a box to catch excess paint splatters.

If you give this Beyond the Book activity a try I’d love to hear how it goes! Share it on Instagram using hashtag #beyondthebook (I’m on Instagram as @book.nerd.mommy) or even just comment here with your thoughts. It would make my day! Or to simply save for later pin the image below.

These DIY painted, speckled eggs are so easy and fast to make. They pair beautifully with this book about eggs and are great for preschool, spring, easter and more!
