“Googly Eye” Chocolate Chip Cookies Inspired by “Angry Cookie”

“Angry Cookie” by Laura Dockrill and Maria Karipidou

Books that help children with emotional awareness and dealing with big emotions are golden in my eyes and this book is a perfect specimen. It addresses the emotion of anger for children in such a light-hearted, yet effective, way. It tells the story of a cookie who wakes up feeling grumpy and continues to explain why everything about his day is going so terribly.

Things take a turn for the better when the ranting cookie realizes that you are being such a good listener. It is then that he decides to tell you the reason why he is so angry. Then, he feels relief and validation after being heard and doesn’t feel so angry anymore. The message is simple: a listening ear can do wonders to help people feel valued and sort through their emotions. We are big fans of this one!

“Googly Eye” Chocolate Chip Cookies

When we fell in love with a book that features a lovable cookie protagonist I simply couldn’t resist creating a cookie recipe inspired by him! Plus, it came at such an opportune time because I was just finishing up fine-tuning my “Perfect Chocolate Chip Cookie” recipe. A few years ago I set out to create what, in my mind, is a recipe for the “perfect” chocolate chip cookies. What does that look like? Well: soft, yet chewy, a flavor that lets the chocolate chips shine, light golden color, and delectable, smooth lumps all over. Sounds diving right?!

Homemade Version:

Gently press some pre-made candy eyes on the dough balls before they bake and you can easily transform them into “Angry Cookies”. Have them right next to each other because they will spread out as they bake. (And because they will likely be crowded.)

Pre-Made Cookie Version:

Attach some pre-made candy eyes onto your chocolate chip cookies using a small amount of your favorite icing. (Either store bought or homemade is fine). That’s it!

***I used THESE large, candy eyes from Wilton.

It’s really quite magical. The end result is just as playful and endearing as the book and I just love how well the huge eyes on the cookies and the eyes in the illustrations pair.

I’m kinda thinking the this pairing of the cookies and the book is a fabulous match in other ways as well. I mean, when you’re upset, don’t cookies tend to make the world just a little bit better? Now, what if those cookies had eyes that you can’t help but smile when seeing and pair with a book about resolving anger? Perfection at a new level right?! I have a feeling these may become a go-to when we are having rough days in our home and I’m not complaining. Bring on the cookies!!!
