Heart Animal Craft Inspired By “My Heart is Like a Zoo”

“My Heart is Like a Zoo” by Michael Hall

This bright and bold book is tons of fun. Each page features an illustration of animal that is made entirely, or almost entirely, from hearts. Along with the illustration is a simile statement about the many emotions that we can feel in our hearts. It would make a wonderful springboard for discussion about emotions.

It is simple in format and so effective. Our favorite part by far are all the creative illustrations made from the same shape. My kids think it is pretty amazing and I would have to agree. This book, with all it’s hearts, would also make an excellent Valentine’s Day book.

Heart Animal Craft

This book has been around for quite a while and I have been meaning to do a craft inspired by the illustrations for the past couple years. It is hard not to read or look through this book without being inspired by all the heart creations and it is so enticing to give it a try. This year we finally did and it was just as much fun as we had hoped.

Supplies:

  • scissors
  • glue stick
  • colored construction paper
  • black marker

Set Up:

  • I cut out oodles of hearts from different colors of construction paper then set them out in a pile with a couple whole sheets of paper and a glue stick and marker for each child.
  • Then I invited them to use the supplies to create their own heart animals.
  • We had the book on-hand so that they could look through for ideas if they wanted.

We created whatever we wanted using our imaginations and it was so much fun. However, another fun idea is to try and recreate one of the animals featured in the story. The back of the book even shows the breakdown of the lions head so that you can easily recreate it step-by-step. That was a lot of fun as well I must confess.

That’s it! This craft is super simple, requires only a few supplies (which you probably already have) and encourages so much creativity. All characteristics of a winner right?!

These heart animals are so simple and so fun to make! They are perfect for Valentine's day or anytime of year and pair perfectly with My Heart is Like a Zoo. #bookcraft #kidsbook #picturebook #valentinesdaycraft
