In The Jungle

“Find Your Way: In the Jungle” by Paul Boston

This picture book really is unique interactive book that brings so much fun to map skills.  Map skills are essential for young students and budding little mathematicians will delight in this exciting adventure of a book and reluctant little mathematicians may just find themselves enjoying a bit of math.  That makes this the perfect book for pretty much any elementary student.

The whole book is one gigantic maze on one gigantic map.  Each page spread is a selection of the whole (which can be seen in its entirety at the beginning of the book for reference) that you must travel across (using your finger) to get to the end destination as well as completing basic mathematical tasks along the way.  The way the maze is set up has it interweaving with various page spreads which results in the reader flipping backwards and forwards through the book quite a bit.  There are also three different “missions” to choose from when completing the maze making it really three mazes in one.

The tasks they use are extremely quick and simple, such as finding the map coordinates for an object in the illustrations, but they are effective as that routine practice can be so beneficial to learning.  The illustrations are bright with many fun little details.  It is definitely one to add  to your educational/fun interactive book library.
