“Julia, Child”

julia child

“The Truth is grown-ups often need some extra help.  Baffled and befuddled, mindless and muddled, they sometimes forget what they know.  So Julia and Simca made a cookbook to remind them.”

“Julia, Child” by Kyo Maclear and Julie Morstad

There is just something magical about food that brings people together.  Do you know what I’m talking about?  Of course you do!  I think its universal.  For instance, I love to bake cupcakes and it is also fun sharing this love of baking with my little boy.  We made our first cupcakes together not to long ago and he was in love.  Helping with the eggbeater and putting on the sprinkles were definitely his favorite part. Waiting for them to bake in the oven definitely wasn’t.  My favorite part was how were were able to enjoy that bonding experience together and make a fond memory.  I look forward to more to come.

“Julia, Child” is a book about two best friends (Julia and Simca) who love to cook and use that love to bring people together.  They live in their own blissful world of cooking and childhood wonder and notice that many adults seem to have lost the magic of youthful curiosity.  They decide to remedy that by creating a recipe that has just the right ingredients to remind adults what it is like to be young.  Their first recipe doesn’t work, but in the end their cupcake recipe does the trick.

I loved this book!  Not only because it highlights the magic of cupcakes I have always known to exist, but because the endearing message is also coupled with the most beautiful and charming illustrations.  This book is definitely a “keeper” and is sure to become a favorite of ours.  And you want to know something else?  I loved this books so much and was so inspired by the cupcakes the girls made that I decided to make a recipe based off of the description and pictures of the cupcakes in the book.  That’s right, I made an actual cupcake recipe inspired from this book!  I’ll even share it!

Find my recipe for “Julia, Child” inspired chocolate almond cupcakes here.

I think it would be a fun activity to bake them together as an activity to enjoy along with the book.  Plus they are mighty tasty if I do say so myself! (The last interior spread photo is of the girls serving the cupcakes that I was inspired by.)
