Leave Me Alone!

leave-me-alone

“Leave Me Alone!” Vera Brosgol

Confession:  I knew that I HAD to have this book the moment that I first read the title and saw the cover.  It made me chuckle to myself.  Partly because of the huge font and the woman’s desperate expression, and partly because I knew it would be one that I could relate to in a humorous way.  And pleasantly enough, it was!

It is about a little grandmother who lives in a small cabin that is bursting with children.  Winter is coming on and she is feeling overwhelmed with all of the knitting that she still needs to get finished.  However, all her bustling and curious grandchildren are just aren’t letting that happen.  Eventually she decides that “enough is enough” and storms out of the cabin with her knitting supplies in search of somewhere she can quietly work.  Her journey starts off harmless enough, the forest and on through to the top of the mountain.  However, pretty soon it enters the realm of ridiculousness when she defiantly marches straight onto the moon and next into a wormhole!  There she finds the peace and quite she craves, finishes her knitting, enjoys a moment to herself, and heads back home to her happy family a new woman.

This book is hilariously wonderful!  The moment the plot goes from predictable to ridiculous is when things start to be shockingly fun.  Children will enjoy the dramatic approach this book takes as they think of times their parents have desperately cried out for a bit of alone time and parents will enjoy this book as they wistfully imagine how wonderful it would be every now and then to visit an obliging wormhole.  This is definitely one that I will love forever!
