“Midnight Creatures: A Pop-Up Shadow Search” by Helen Friel
Are you ready for a bold statement? Here it is: this is hands-down, without-a-doubt, one of the coolest books that I have ever seen! Seriously though, its amazing! First off, it is a pop-up book with fabulous detail that goes across the whole page spread. Secondly, paperwork done by the talented Helen Friel is incredible. Thirdly, you use a flashlight in a dark room to shine through the cut-outs to make animal shadows appear. And lastly, it’s a search and find book where you search for a handful of animals each page spread with your flashlight in the shadows created! Amazing right? My mind is officially blown!
The quality of this book is wonderful! The pop-ups are super sturdy and even though my copy is brand new the pages are heavy/thick enough that they open flat really well. Also, the flashlight feature works like a charm. I love how you can’t see all the animals at once with your flashlight in just one position, you have to scan the flashlight back and forth and up and down so that the paperwork lines up just right and the form of the animal you are searching for appears. It is magical. If you are looking for a fun book that will “wow” then I would definitely recommend getting this one. It will not disappoint!!!
