Mini Fruit Cakes and “The Case of the Stinky Stench”

“The Case of the Stinky Stench” by Josh Funk and Brendan Kearney

Sir French Toast and Lady Pancake are back in this epic tale of the search for what is causing a horrific stinky stench in the land of the refrigerator.  Sir French Toast’s nephew Inspector Croissant is on the job with them to solve the mystery.  Their search leads them all through the refrigerator until they finally discover the culprit: a forgotten and moldy fruit cake.

This book is a real hoot.  The word choice that Josh Funk employs is delectable and the illustrations are full of quirkiness and humor.  It would make the most incredible read-aloud and is definitely one to add to your library!

Mini Fruit Cakes inspired by “The Case of the Stinky Stench”

So, when I saw that poor fruit cake at the end  you know that I just HAD to come up with an easy fruit cake recipe to celebrate this book.  The recipe I am sharing below is done with children in mind.  It is easy and quick enough to enjoy making with little chefs and creates perfectly small, individualized portions.  It is by no means your traditional fruit cake, but it is fun and easy to make, which was my priority with this recipe.

They are made basically with just a yellow cake mix, fruit cake mix (I used this one here from Amazon) and slivered almonds.  That’s it!  To top them off I added these candy bow ties as a nod to the fruit cake in the book who sports a lovely green bow tie.  I hope these little cakes add more fun and whimsy to your experience with this hilarious book. Just don’t forget them in the back of your fridge or you may wind up dealing with a stinky stench of your own!

  • Yield: About 2 Dozen
  • Category: book recipe, Dessert

Ingredients

  • 1 box yellow cake mix (and the oil, eggs and water asked for)
  • 16 ounces fruit cake mix
  • 1/2 cup slivered almonds
  • candy bow ties for topping if desired

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees then follow the instructions on the box for the yellow cake mix.
  2. After you have mixed together the cake batter, stir in the candied fruit mix and the slivered almonds. Next, scoop the batter into a heavily greased muffin tin to about two thirds full.
  3. Bake for 14-16 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the middle comes up clean. Remove from the pan onto a rack to cool and then top with bow tie candies if desired. (You can adhere them with frosting, icing gel, or royal icing.)
