“Mr. Dog’s Christmas at the Hollow Tree Inn” and Mince Pies

“Mr. Dog’s Chrsitmas at the Hollow Tree Inn” by Albert Bigelow Paine and Adam McCauley

This is a classic Christmas story written in 1898 and was recently restored with beautiful illustrations by McCauley that honor the old-time English feel of the story.  It is the story of Mr. Dog and his woodland friends whom often like to gather at old Hollow Tree Inn.  One winter they are gathered together and Mr. Dog tells them about Christmas and how it works in Man’s house.  They are intrigued and decide that they want a Christmas of their own.

Mr. Dog, being the kind and jolly friend that he is, decides to humor his friends and take the role of Santa to please his friends.  He borrows a suit and sets about filling stocking and making a lovely Christmas for his friends at the Inn.  It is a purely delightful story that has the feel of a cozy classic that has stood the test of time.

“Mr. Dog’s Christmas at the Hollow Tree Inn” inspired Mince Pies

In the story Mr. Dog’s woodland friends are happily asleep Christmas Eve when Mr. Dog arrives to play Santa.  While they are asleep Possum longingly dreams of mince pies.  Mince pies are a traditional holiday english treat that seem to fit the spirit and festivities of this book perfectly.  Below I shared a recipe that is so easy and so “pre-made” it is really more of a tutorial than a recipe.  This also means that it is absolutely perfect for little chefs to help you create.  They are quick, simple, and would make a fabulous tradition paired with the reading of this holiday masterpiece.

  • Yield: about 16 mini pies
  • Category: book recipe, Dessert

Ingredients

  • 1 box of 2 pre made pie crusts
  • 1 jar of prepared mincemeat filling, 27 ounces (I used fruit mincemeat)
  • powdered sugar for topping

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 425 degrees fahrenheit and using nonstick cooking spray, grease your muffin tin.
  2. Flour a flat baking surface and roll out your pre-made pie crusts. Then, using a 4 inch round fluted cutter cut the bottom crusts of your mini pies. Place them in the bottoms of your muffin tin. They will crinkle and fold a bit when they go in. That is okay.
  3. Using a spoon, fill each "pie crust cup" with pre-made mincemeat filling. Fill them until they are just about full.
  4. Using the remaining pie crust dough, cut out small stars and place them on top of your mini mincemeat pies as a top crust.
  5. Place on the bottom rack of your oven and bake for 30 minutes until the crusts are slightly golden brown.
  6. Sprinkle with powdered sugar if desired and serve warm.
