Nature Art Inspired by “Drawn from Nature”

“Drawn from Nature” by Helen Ahpornisiri

It’s another nonfiction beauty!  Only this one has a very special and unique twist.  All the illustrations inside are collages made completely from pressed plants and bits of nature.  Each one is so intricate that it had me doing a double take to inspect each delicate little detail.  It really is quite phenominal!

The text in this book is also definitely worth mentioning.  It is divided in four sections that take you through all four seasons starting with spring.  Each page has a segment that corresponds with the illustration and addresses it form the viewpoint of that particular season.  I found the writing style quite poetic and the perfect accompaniment to the gorgeous illustrations.  All in all it is a very sophisticated and inspiring nonfiction book!

Art from Nature

As mentioned above, each illustration in this book is SO inspiriting!  After reading it I dare you not to want to try your hand at “nature art” yourself!  I know I totally wanted to give it a try and I thought it would be a fantastic “beyond the book” craft idea to go with the book!  This art process is so simple to experiment with and so rewarding.  All you have to do is press some flowers and bits of nature, then when they are ready you simply glue them to card stock to make any image your heart desires.  Easy peasy.

I decided to attempt a butterfly and even though it is super simple it was a lot of fun to create.  If you are doing this craft with especially young children an adaptation that you might want to try is printing out a large, simple clipart image of your choice and letting your toddler glue pressed plants on the image.  It is pretty open to any and all ideas because sometimes creativity needs a little bit of room, wouldn’t you agree?

If you give this Beyond the Book activity a try I’d love to hear how it goes! Share it on Instagram and tag me! (I’m on Instagram as @book.nerd.mommy) or even just comment here with your thoughts. It would make my day! Or to simply save for later pin the image below.
