No Such Thing

“No Such Thing” by Ella Bailey

Halloween is for pumpkins and candy and costumes and, most definitely, halloween books.  This one has been on repeat at our house and it’s not hard to see why.  It is beautiful and fun and not the least bit scary.  It is about a little girl who notices that things start going awry in her home.  Vases tip over, items are going missing, and it happens to be “that time of year”.  You know, the end of October.  But this little girl is not one to be fooled!  She knows there is no such things as ghosts.  In fact, she can come up with a logical explanation for every mysterious occurrence.

The real fun though, however, is that you as the reader know differently.  On each page spread a careful eye can spot a ghost or two that she fails to see.  Children will delight in “being in on the secret” and enjoy finding all the ghosts.  The best part is at the end of the book you discover what the ghosts had been planning all along and why they needed to borrow a few things.  I’ll let you discover what these cute little guys were up to when you check out the book.

The illustrations are also beautiful.  The color palate that Ella chose is unique and so pleasing to look at.  The illustrations have a sweet retro feel and include a lot of fun details that are thoughtful and fun to linger on.  It is definitely one to add to your “Spooky Stack” of books for Halloween!
