Our Favorite Picture Books for January: Winter and Growth Mindset

I just love new beginnings and every New Year you can find me completely excited about new year’s resolutions and making plans.  Everything just feels so fresh and full of possibilities and I love that feeling.  Because January is a month of new beginnings I thought it would be wonderful to highlight Growth Mindset books in our family at this time.

Growth mindset as I understand it is the principle that most any ability can be improved through dedication and perseverance. This includes skills such as performance in sports and even characteristics such as patience. This principle is powerful because it means that we can do most anything we wish and that we should never be discouraged by failure. Mistakes and falling short are seen as a healthy part of the learning process and success is focused on along the journey and not just as an end destination.  What a perfect theme for the beginning of a new year right?!

Also, because January is the height of the Winter season of course I had to feature some spectacular winter books as well.  If I am being honest with you, I love this season much more in theory than actuality after the date of January 1st.  Through the holidays the snow feels magical to me, after December it starts to feel a bit dreary.  Picture books help me remember all the good points of winter and they even help encourage my kids to get out and play in the snow a bit.  I can’t argue with that kind of success so, in addition to sharing our favorite growth mindset picture books below, I’m sharing some of our favorite Winter books as well.

There is a free printable at the bottom to make things easy for you so that you can simply print it out and head to your library to stock your shelves with goodness.  May your new year be full of magical snow and the empowering feeling that with a bit of hard work you can accomplish anything.
