Planting Seeds Book Activity with “Florette”

“Florette” by Anna Walker

When Mae’s family moves from the country to the city Mae misses her garden terribly.  She tries to recreate it with chalk drawings and stacks of boxes but it just isn’t the same.  However, when she runs across the Florette she finds a small bit of plant that she is able to transfer to her jar and ends up creating her own garden with plants in various containers and inspires her friends and community to do the same, transforming the neighborhood into a lush and beautiful place to be.

I love this book!  Mae’s determination and creative solution can be such an inspiration for little naturalists.  Mae shows that no matter where you are, there is a place for nature and plants can thrive.  She also shows the impact that one individual can have as she is an example for her community.  Plus, I should probably mention that the illustrations are gorgeous!  It is such a treasure of a book!

Planting Seeds Activity

Mae’s solution for her garden of planing seeds in various containers is so simple yet so impactful.  I thought it would be a fun idea to show children that just like Mae and her community, they can add a bit more nature to their world the same way!  So, we grabbed a jar and we put some dirt in and we planted some wheat seeds.  My kids were so excited to watch them grow and I had so much fun watching the wonder on their faces as the seeds sprouted and began to grow.  It has been so much fun for us to have this little plant around and it was such an easy and quick activity.  What more can you ask for?

We chose a jar because that is the first container that Florette uses in the book and we happened to have one handy.  I am so glad we did because it was especially neat that my kids got to see the seeds opening through the clear glass as well as the roots growing.  We have had a lot of good discussions about how plants grow through this activity and it makes it such a wonderful STEM learning experience.  We hope that you love planting your seed sin your own little container as well and find as much magic in it as we did!
