Poor Little Guy

Poor Little Guy by Elanna Allen

You know how sometimes you just can’t help yourself from falling in love with the cover and making glowing judgments about how wonderful the book must be?  Well, confession, this was one of those times.  I fell in love with the cover of the book and just knew it would be wonderful.  Well, I finally read it and to my delight it was every bit as fantastic as I was hoping!  Don’t you love it when that happens?

This book is about a little yellow fish who finds himself the object of interest to an octopus.  He is a well-meaning friendly octopus who loves his new friend and just wants to play.  However, he isn’t very considerate as he plays games with the little puffer fish who isn’t having any fun at all.  Things go to far when the octopus takes an innocent little taste of the fish to see if he tastes as adorable as he looks.

However, the “poor little guy” can’t take it anymore and to the readers delight you discover that he isn’t just any little yellow fish, he is a puffer fish that can puff himself up and turn incredibly spiky.  And that is the moment he decided to unleash his identity and spiky powers.  The octopus is in shock and releases him and the story takes a fabulously humorous twist as you realize that the “poor little guy” wasn’t the puffer fish all along, it was the octopus!

The story is not only fun and surprising the illustrations are clean and interesting with great typography.  I absolutely love the swirls that Elanna used in the water to create texture and the octopus is just as cute as the puffer fish.  The choice that she made of illustrating this whole book in blues and grays with the pop of yellow for the fish really works.  Your eye is drawn to our spectacled friend from page to page and is ready when the drama strikes.  This is such a clever, fun little book that is so worth looking up!
