Poppy Pickle

“…and suddenly the strangest thing happened.  POP!  Her imagination came… ALIVE!  It was incredible.  It was amazing.  It was magic. “

Poppy Pickle  by Emma Yarlett

I am smitten.  Head-over-heels, over-the-moon smitten.  I don’t know if I can rave about this one enough.  Its the kind of book that draws you in by the creative name, then captures you with the jacket, then surprises you with the cover, then makes you laugh with the text and makes you fall in love with Poppy.

I had a big imagination as a child, but then, what child does’t?  This is a book that celebrates that.  It is about a little girl named Poppy who has an imagination so big, it is bursting out of her.  Literally!  The story starts where she gets sent upstairs to clean her room, but instead of cleaning she is distracted by imagining fanciful beasts in her head.  Then, all of a sudden, they come alive!  Right inside her bedroom!  It is all great fun until they make a noisy mess.   Then, Poppy is in a pickle as her parents head upstairs, what is going to happen when they find out?

The illustrations in this book are hilarious, delightful, bright, bold, and an all out party.  The text is witty and clever with a punch of ingenuity.  Emma Yarlett most definitely has quite the big imagination of her own and I already can’t wait for her next book!
