Red Velvet Cut-Out Cookies Inspired by “Delivery”

“Delivery” by Aaron Meshon

This is a nearly wordless picture book that is filled with so much heart! It starts when an elderly lady looks at the calendar and notices that Valentine’s Day is just days away. She quickly bakes some heart cookies and then sends them off with the post to deliver to a child.

When the cookies head off with the postman the real fun begins. They are passed from delivery person to delivery person in the most whimsical and imaginative way. The deliver vehicles include trucks, tractors and even a space ship as the package travels through ocean and space to reach its destination. A destination that is sure to make readers giggle at the end.

The bright and joyful illustrations, complete with a trail of hearts that follows the package in each page spread, are so wonderfully done. This book has a heartwarming and celebratory feel to it that is sure to delight readers young and old.

Red Velvet Cut-Out Heart Cookies

When I saw the page spread where our protagonist bakes cookies I just knew I had to make a recipe to go with this book! The heart cookies in this story represent love because the illustrations make it evident that the woman is sending not only a tasty treat, but a piece of her heart as well.

The illustrations show that the heart cookies are of a cut-out variety and are made from a red dough. This information, coupled with the fact that tis is a great Valentine’s Day book, made me think of red velvet! Therefore, the cookie recipe I created inspired by this book is a red velvet cut-out recipe.

I am so pleased with how these cookies turned out! They hold their shape perfectly and have a definite red velvet flavor to them that is sure to bring up all kinds of nostalgia. They are firm enough to hold their shape well (especially for milk dunking), but are also soft enough to not be a considered a crunchy cookie. I think it is a nice balance. Plus, they are so much fun to make and would be fabulous for sending to a loved one, Valentine’s Day or not! I mean, who wouldn’t love to receive some red velvet heart cookies and a little bit of love?!

One of the ingredients that makes these cookies so special is the Red Velvet Emulsion. It gives them the perfect red velvet flavor! You can find Red Velvet Emulsion in stores, but if you’re having difficulty finding it, or want a recommendation, here is the link to the one that I used.
