Sock Puppet Craft Inspired by “Wild”

“Wild” by Emily Hughes

Isn’t that one of the most eye-catching, fabulous covers you have ever seen?! (swoon!) The endpapers inside are just as stunning and y’all know I love me some good endpapers! The story is about a little girl who is raised by animals in the wild and is complety delighted by it. She is discovered one day by some other humans who take her into “society” and try to teach her how to “behave”. However, she is unhappy with such a different way of life and finds herself misunderstood by everyone around her. She soon runs off and finds her way back into the wild where she is content once more.  At first I wasn’t quite sure how I felt about this book because some of the illustrations are a little harsh for my personal taste. However, they are still incredible and I understand how she used them to make her point in the book. You shouldn’t try to tame things that are “so happily wild”.  Plus, it has grown on me more and more over time and is now a favorite.

Sock Puppet Craft

Because of her ginormous eyes that resemble wiggly eyes and her crazy hair I thought that she would make a wonderfully fun sock puppet.  I had never made a sock puppet before, but I found a good tutorial and got to work.  It was so much fun to make and the end result is definitely fabulous.  It didn’t turn out quite as I had imagined, but we get the biggest kick out of  how she turned out.  She looks wild and friendly and my kiddos smile every single time they see her.  I would definitely count that as a win!

Supplies:

  • white sock (we used adult size 8-10)
  • wiggly eyes
  • glue gun
  • needle
  • thread
  • green raffia
  • artificial flowers

Process:

  1. We made the basic sock puppet base using the tutorial HERE from AOK Corral
  2. Glue on your wiggle eyes.
  3. Start cutting raffia in long strips and clue the middle section to the top of your sock puppet. This was when I had just started.  I added more and more until it was more full.
  4. Glue some random artificial leaves and flowers throughout the hair.
