Spider Sundaes Inspired by “Zombelina”

“Zombelina” by Kristyn Crow and Molly Idle

This book is positively delightful!  It is a story that celebrates differences and allows us the opportunity to embrace the unusual.  Zombelina is your average zombie girl who has a flair for dancing.  However, when her mom puts her in ballet class her human classmates don’t know quite what to make of her.  In the end, Zombelina finds the courage to show them a new way to do things that is just as wonderful as ever before and teaches acceptance.  It is also a beautiful display of the power of a supportive and loving family.  Such a darling book!

Spider Sundaes

After Zombelinas big dance recital her family heads home to celebrate.  The star of the celebration are “spider sundaes with skeleton spoons”.  The spider sundaes in the illustrations looked so flipping adorable that I just knew I had to recreate them in a beyond the book treat form.  Plus, as an added bonus, they are fabulous for the Halloween season.

There is nothing to bake or pre make and they take just minutes to assemble.  For the body I used Little Debbie Snowball cakes.  They are orange this time of year, but I think even the classic pink ones would make fun spiders.  (The ones in the book are purple after all!)  For the legs I used purple pull and peel strands, the eyes are mini Oreos (adhered with frosting) and brown candy coated chocolates and we topped it off with whipped cream and a cherry.  Don’t you just want to dig in with a skeleton spoon?  (Too bad I don’t have any of those!)

My kids were thrilled with the results.  They couldn’t wait to eat them and had the best time pulling them apart bit by bit to enjoy.  You can bake them in small sundae glasses (as shown above) or, for easier eating, you can assemble them on a plate.  Either way they are so much fun and sure to please.  I think they may even become a yearly tradition in our home for Halloween. The tiny investment time versus the super cute reward is just too tempting…

Spider Sundaes

  • Yield: 1 spider sundae
  • Category: book recipe

Ingredients

  • 1 Little Debbie Snowball cake of any color (we used orange)
  • 4 strands of pull and peel any color (we used purple)
  • 2 mini Oreo cookies
  • 2 small, round candy coated candies of any color (we used brown)
  • 1 maraschino cherry
  • can of whipped cream
  • small amount of frosting to adhere eyes (any kind, any flavor)

Instructions

  1. Break the pull and peel strands in half to create 8 "spider legs". Arrange them on your plate with four on each side and the center ends coming towards each other in a circular fashion. Place your Snowball cake directly on top of them for the "spider body".
  2. Carefully twist apart your mini oreos and set aside the tops that have no cream. Next, gently press one candy coated chocolate into the center of the cream of each oreo round. These become your "spider eyes". Adhere them onto your Snowball cake using a small amount of frosting.
  3. Top your Spider Sundaes with some whipped cream and a cherry and your done.
