The Pruwahaha Monster

pruwahaa

“I cannot believe my eyes, the monster thought. This is not possible.  This is too preposterous for words.”

The Pruwahaha Monster by Jean-Paul Mulders, Illustrated by Jacques Maes and Lise Braekers

Sometimes my little guy gets on a silly-kick.  When he does he finds most everything funny and he wants nothing more than to be goofy and energetic.  I call him my little Mr. Magoo when he’s like this and I find it so encourageable.  I know my child’s not the only one.  Children everywhere get in that mood where being spooked in a silly way is fun and tickles are completely welcome.  Isn’t it the greatest?!  This is a perfect book for such times.

A father and a son head off to the park and the 5 year old son starts to swing happily away.  Little does he know that not far away lives the dreaded Pruwahaha Monster who likes nothing more than to snack on little boys and girls.  However, despite his best attempts to scare our swinging friend, he produces nothing but giggles.  In fact, the harder the monster tries, the more our friend giggles.  Embarrassed and disappointed the monster heads off to dejectedly mope and munch on a pile of leaves.

I adore this book.  Really.  It is one of my new favorites.  The illustrations are incredible!  They are simple and detailed at the same time.  All of the pattern-play speaks to my heart and I love the simple color palette of mostly turquoise, orange and beige. The story is silly and fun and the type of enjoyable spooky that isn’t too scary.  My favorite part is the very last page reveals a wonderful surprise that brings such a pleasant ending to the story.  I won’t spoil it for you, I’ll let you discover it with your kiddos.  This book comes out later this fall so keep your eyes open.
