The Zoo’s Grand Opening

The Zoo’s Grand Opening: An ABC and Counting Book by Judith Drews

I have seen a lot of ABC and counting books, and chances are if you have young children then you have too.  With so many options I have gotten picky about which ones hold my love and this quirky little book has definitely earned a spot in our home.

It starts with an empty zoo and two enthusiastic zookeepers that are waiting for the animals to arrive and arrive they do!  One-by-one they come and in alphabetical order too! Each animal is accompanied by delightful text that rhymes and contains silly tidbits about each new addition to the zoo.  The counting aspect comes into play by a counter at the top right hand corner of every page spread that shows where the new animal places in the lineup of 26 that are coming.

My favorite part of this book, hands-down, is the zookeepers.  There are some interesting animals that show up with interesting quirks and they seem prepared for almost anything and have a completely optimistic attitude that is ready to “roll with the punches”.  They obviously are two fellas who love their job and the expressions on their faces throughout the book are so entertaining.  This book is one that was definitely written and illustrated with a spoonful of fun and a spoonful of humor.
