Too Many Moose

too many moose

“When Martha decided she must have a pet, she marveled and mulled over what she should get.  But much of the choices made Martha quite glum… instead of magnificent, most were humdrum.”

Too Many Moose by Lisa M. Bakos and Mark Chambers

When I was a child I went through a lot of pets: fire-bellied newts, fish, bunnies, cats, dogs, a turtle, chameleons, frogs, hamsters, birds and a few more I’m probably forgetting.  I’m pretty sure that I would have loved a moose!  In fact, I’m pretty sure I would have loved it even more if I could order it by mail!

This book fulfills that childhood dream I’m sure I would have had and one that I’m sure many children would love to imagine.  It is about a little girl named Martha who wants a pet, but when she goes through her options, they all just seem too dull.  That is, all of them except a moose!  So she orders one and it comes by mail.  (The funniest illustration by-the-way: a mailman carting a mail-wrapped moose on a dolly!)  They have so much fun together going to movies and getting manicures that she figures that if one moose is so great, then more must be better!  So she orders another and another and another until she learns the valuable lesson that sometimes, more is not always better.

This book is absolutely, positively delightful.  It’s one of those books I dare you to read without smiling, or even busting out in giggles.  The illustrations are incredibly playful and fun with bright colors and crisp lines.  Then there is the text, oh how I love the text!  There are so many alliterations with the letter “m” that it makes this book a super fun read-aloud.  Absolutely brilliant!
