“Yellow Time”

cover-yellow-time3

“Yellow Time” by Lauren Stringer and Autumn Wands

Fall is my favorite season.  Sweaters, scarves, hot coco, crisp air, apple desserts, and gorgeous leaves.  I love that moment when you look around and realize that all the leaves have changed, as if by magic. Then, when they fall, they fall with glory.  They float and dance to the ground and cover it in a blanket of their celebratory colors.  That is exactly what this book is about.

This book starts by setting the stage of a town that has trees ripe with yellow leaves just waiting to fall.  Anticipation hangs in the air and everyone seems to be waiting.  Then the clouds billow up and with a giant burst it begins: yellow time.  The leaves swirl and twirl to the ground in all their glory and all the children come out of their homes to dance with the falling leaves.  Then after they have fallen they collect bouquets of yellow to take home and press in books to remember.  Such a sweet story and such a beautiful tribute to autumn.

The illustrations in this book are also what make it truly special. They are absolutely saturated in the color yellow (of course) and feature swirling strokes and unique perspectives.  You can almost feel the movement of the leaves through the pages.  This sense of movement, and celebration of “yellow time” inspired me to create a “Beyond the Book” craft for this book.  What better way to celebrate along with the spirit of this book than leaf wands with streams of gold and yellow?
