“Yellow Kayak” by Nina Laden and Melissa Castrillon
I love books that speak to the simplicity and beauty of childhood. Books that celebrate sentiment and imagination in the everyday. That is how this book feels, but with a dash of magic added to it. It is the book about a magical and imaginative journey with a little boy and his little yellow kayak.
The text is lyrical and descriptive, yet there isn’t much of a plot. The book just focuses on the boat ride. The mystic feel in the way it is written and the illustrations lead me to believe that it is portraying the journey in the boat as it is in the eyes and heart of the little boy’s imagination. Probably they just floated along for an hour or two, but to the little boy it was a trip that entailed friendly octopuses and adventures galore. Also, the fact that the illustrations show that his riding companion is a giraffe is just darling.
Then there are the illustrations! They are absolutely luxe and embellished with the most delicious details. I also cannot get over the dreamy palette used! This book has my whole heart!
