“Bruce’s Big Move” by Ryan T. Higgins
He’s baaack! That grumpy, but oh-so-lovable Bruce is back in this third installment of the Mother Bruce series. The adventures started when Bruce found himself adopting four geese, but then some mice decided to move in and now Bruce has decided it is time to leave. Four geese including mice are simply too much and if the mice won’t leave, than Bruce and his geese must leave.
However, leaving doesn’t quite bring him all the joy he expected and in the end Bruce’s large heart wins out and his family grows. This book has all the humor and wit that you would expect from another Bruce story and it is sure to delight new and old Bruce fans alike.
DIY Pinecone Craft inspired by “Bruce’s Big Move”
I am personally a big fan of any grumpy character that is likable and Bruce has become one of my favorites. I find myself empathizing with his need for peace, yet smiling along as his big heart wins over. The geese and mice know him for who he is too, a real sweetheart.
I think that is why I had to chuckle out loud when I saw the endpapers in this darling new book. They show a desktop scene from Bruce which includes an applesauce recipe that totally looks legitimate along with a few other items including a pinecone that one of Bruce’s new family members made just for him. Complete with Bruce-like features and a little note attatched.
Honestly though, isn’t it just the best?! The moment I saw it I knew we had to make one. They couldn’t be easier and I was thrilled with the results. If Bruce wasn’t a fictional character I think we would mail him our little tokens of affection to add to his collection.
- 1 black pipe cleaner
- hot glue gun or other strong adhesive
- 1 small to medium pinecone
- 2 medium wiggly eyes
All you have to do for this craft is cut your black pipe cleaner into two pieces that make the lengths that you would like considering the size of your pine cone. (One becomes Bruce’s iconic grumpy brow and the other his grumpy frown.) Next you glue the wiggly eyes in the center of your pinecone and then glue the longer pipe cleaner for a brow towards the top of the pinecone and the smaller piece of pipe cleaner (bent into a slight from) towards the bottom of your pinecone. (Leaving the eyes in the middle.) That’s it! Takes a matter of minutes and produces delightful results.
Aren’t they simple perfection?! Now all I have to do is try that applesauce recipe….. If you give this Beyond the Book activity a try I’d love to hear how it goes!
